There there are lots of possible trips around Khinalyg, but the following are two recommended itineraries. The first trip is for 2 days and the second for 4 days. These two trips start from Guba. Transportation from Baku can also be arranged. Other popular starting points are from the resorts Suvar in Laza or from Long Forest outside Gusar. ¤ 2 Days - Travel to Khinalyg by Jeep - explore village and do a day trip to Ateshgah, return to Guba by an alternate route.

¤ 4 days - Travel to Khinalyg by Jeep. Explore village, spend night in Khinalyg. Visit Ateshgah and cross the Baltiqaya pass (3,200 meters) and stay in Laza. Travel through the Shahyaylag (high plains surrounded by mountains) and camp in Bazarduzu. Ride back to Khinalyg and then take a Jeep back down to Guba.


Day 1: Leave Guba at 9 am and travel by Jeep to Khinalyg. Enjoy the spectacular trip up through the mountains and across rivers. The highlights include the "Tolkeinchasm" and "Cloudcatcher Canyon". Have a tasty picnic lunch alongside river Gudyal. Arrive in Khinalyg (2,300 meters) and then spend the afternoon exploring the village and museums. Accomodation can be arranged in either private houses with some of the villagers or in the Khinalyg guest house. Enjoy traditional Khinalygi food for dinner.

Day 2: After breakfast, travel to Ateshgah (eternal flame) by horse or foot. Have tea and a small lunch by the ancient holy site which is beautifully situated higher up the mountains with fantastic views. After lunch, travel back to Khinalyg with a short side trip to the historic "Mugan Pir". In Khinalyg, have dinner and then travel to Guba along an alternate route. Travel is by UAZ (Russian made Jeep). Sightseeing trips to Galakhudat hamlet and Susay village. Arrive in Guba by 7 - 8 pm. You can then travel back to Baku or if you prefer, spend the night at Long Forest Resort or in Guba hotel.

This steep mountain pass at 3,200 meters (approx 10,000 feet) gives you stunning views of the Great Caucasus mountains including Bazarduzu and Shahdag (the two highest mountains in Azerbaijan). Have a short rest at the top of the mountain and have a snack of locally made cheese, fruits, and bread. Descend towards Laza (1,500 meters) where you can stay in the comfortable cabins at Suvar or stay in a home in the village. It is also possible to camp in the mountains above Laza.

Day 3: Continue on horseback to the mountain Shahdag on towards Bazarduzu. The day will be spent traveling through Shahyaylaq, a pictorial plan surrounded by high mountains of Shahyaylag, Bazarduzu, Tufan, Shahdag. That night you will sleep in tents at the base of Bazarduzu mountain by the rivers where you can see beautiful birds, foxes, and wild mountain goats. If you wish, we can also arrange for you to join a local shepherd and his family for dinner. Otherwise, we will arrange dinner separately.

Day 4: Travel back to Khinalyg on horseback. The morning is spent riding alongside the Khinalyg river between Tufan and Gizilgaya mountains. Along the way visit "Alkhasbulag" - a natural spring whose water has special healing/cleansing qualities (its reported to be especially helpful for kidney stones!). We will also make a short pilgrimage to the "Mugan Pir" - an ancient holy spot close to the river. Arrive in Khinalyg in time for lunch. After lunch travel back down to Guba by along an alternate route. Travel is by UAZ (Russian made Jeep) with sightseeing trips to Galakhudat hamlet and Susay village. Arrive in Guba by 7 - 8 pm. You can then travel back to Baku or if you prefer, spend the night at Long Forest Resort or in Guba Hotel.
